How to pick a garment to upcycle into a bag or purse, part 2

It took more than a day to get this posted but you know how it goes... stuff happens!

In contrast to the tailored jacket, this coat is long and simply made. Even so, the fabric is 100% wool, soft, thick, and made in Italy. Definitely a better choice for Upcycling.

After taking it apart, I've got a good side section with facing that will be easy to peel off. I'll probably keep the patch pockets in the final design which will give me more fabric to work with.

The back section is nice and flat, too, although I'll have to do some piecing to sew up the back vent.

Tomorrow (who am I kidding) or some day, I'll post the final product from this coat. I was going to turn it into a shopping bag liner but now I'm thinking a tote bag. We'll see...

I've been concerned for the environment since my mom took me to the first Earth Day in 1970 --- I was an impressionable 11 years old.  A few years later, when a new bank was being built in our little New Hampshire town, I started a petition to save the maple tree on the proposed site. The petition worked and the building was set back from the curb to leave room for the tree.
